About this Recipe
I know preparing filling and a different variety breakfast each day is a daunting task . So today I have, one more breakfast option for you all … and this time its Tomato Rava Upma. This Upma is a nice variation to the regular ones. I had earlier shared Tomato poori recipe .. the tanginess from tomatoes makes the dish so yum !!
If you are bored of eating same old upma ..you must try this as they are not only easy to make but a real treat to your taste buds. They are tangy, spicy n yummy…a keeper recipe for sure. It’s quick , easy and filling. You can load it with your choice of veggies too , to make it more colorful and tasty .
Ingredients for tomato upma:
- Rava – We would be using upma rava to make this tomato upma . It’s also known as semolina or sooji .
- Tomato – Other than upma rava , tomato is the hero of this dish . It adds a nice tang , flavor and color to the upma
- Tempering ingredient’s – We would be using the regular south indian tempering ingredients like mustard , urad dal , channa dal etc . Addition of cashews is optional .
- Oil + Ghee – addition of a mix of oil and ghee gives nice texture for upma. It not only makes the upma non mushy but also flavorful . However , if you are a vegan , you can skip Ghee.
- Garam Masala – For some additional flavor garam masala is added . As a variation you can also use vangibath powder .
- Other ingredients like onion ,coconut , lemon , curry leaves , coriander leaves etc
- Red Chilli powder + Green Chilli for required spiciness

Tomato Upma recipe with step by step photos
- Heat a pan or kadai . Add 1 cup upma rava . Dry roast it on medium flame , on medium flame until the aroma starts and turn light golden in color. Takes around 3-4 mins. Keep the roasted rava aside to use later.
- Take a kadai. Add 2-3 tsp oil + 1 tsp ghee . Add 1/2 tsp mustard , tsp Urad dal and tsp Chana dal. Let /they splutter .
- Add few cashew pieces ,few curry leaves and 2-4 slit green chilli . Sauté till cashew becomes golden and crisp. When done , add 1 medium size chopped onion . Sauté till raw smell goes .This takes 1-2 mins.
- Add 2 -3 nos finely chopped Tomatoes , tsp salt and saute till mushy .
- Cover and cook for 1-2 mins , let tomatoes get mushy . If you want can add choice of your veggies too.
- To the mushy tomatoes .. add 1/2 tsp haldi , tsp red chilli powder and tsp Garam masala powder. fry for a minute.
- Add 2.5 cup – 3 cup water and salt to taste
- Let the water boil well .
- When water comes to a rolling boil, simmer the flame and slowly add roasted rava in one hand and mix it using the other hand. Keep mixing while adding rava to avoid the formation of lumps.
- Make sure to mix it well and take care that there are no lumps. Keep on medium and cook closed for 3-4 minutes on low flame till semolina is completely cooked .
- After the rava is cooked well, lastly add grated coconut ,chopped coriander leaves and lemon juice.i If you want can add a tsp of ghee towards the end . Gives a nice gloss. Mix well .
- Serve Tomato rava upma hot for best taste .
Points to note :
- Roasting of rava in medium flame is very very important for a great upma . Else we will end up with a sticky upma. Make super to do on medium flame only to avoid burning of rava.
- If you roast the rava well, you can increase the water quantity too .you will get nice soft upma .
- Add more ghee and oil if you want exact hotel style upma .If you reduce oil and ghee in the recipe, upma may not have the same texture as in the picture.
- You can add some veggies like peas , beans carrot etc .
- Instead of garam masala for flavoring , you can add vangi bath masala powder
- Make sure to add rava only when water is rolling boiling , else upma will turn sticky
Tomato Upma
Ingredients
- 1 cup Upma Rava / Semolina / Sooji
- 2-3 tsp Oil, any oil
- 1-2 tsp Ghee
- 1/2 tsp Mustard
- 1 tsp Urad Dal
- 1 tsp Channa Dal
- Few pcs Cashews, optional
- few Curry leaves
- 2-3 nos Green Chilli, slit
- 1 no Onion , chopped
- 2-3 nos Tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric / haldi
- 1 tsp Red Chilli powder
- 1 tsp Garam Masala powder
- Salt to taste
- few sprigs Coriander leaves, chopped
- few tsp Coconut, grated
- lemon juice
Instructions
