What can I say about today’s humble dish . Neer Uppittu aka savory Rava Porridge , a type of upma prepared using medium rava and lots of water !! Neer upma is very very easy to prepare, all you need is just basic tempering and the end result is a very comforting dish. Hardly takes 5-10 mins .
I know it’s a no rocket science recipe , but the nostalgic memories associated with the dish , definitely makes worth to share !!!
Whenever we were sick and had no appetite / had sore throat , Ajji used to make this neer uppitt and trust me .. we used to empty it in no time . So comforting yet so delicious.
Later this tradition was taken over by amma and was made frequently on demand for breakfast / dinner , Such was the craving !! Now my kids too love this dish.
Some dishes are always special and remain childhood favorite isn’t it ? Do try this simple dish and enjoy Hot !!
Neer Upittu Recipe with step by step photos :
- To a kadai / frying pan add 1 cup medium Rava and roast under medium flame until it turns slight golden and you get nice aroma.
- Keep aside well roasted rava .
- To the same kadai , add 2-3 tsp Oil and 1-2 tsp Ghee . Add a tsp of Mustard , let it splutter .
- Late add few broken red chillies and few curry leaves . Fry for a minute .
- Add 4- 4.5 cups of water . Add Salt to taste .
- Once water is hot , add 1/2 cup tangy curd or butter milk . Combine .
- Bring water to boil .
- Add roasted rava . Stir in between . Make sure no lumps are formed .
- Cover and cook for 2-3 mins on medium flame.
- Neer upitt would have cooked . Make sure to keep the consistency thin .
- You will notice that neer upitt will thicken as it cools . So make sure to enjoy it super hot .
- Drizzle few drops of ghee while serving . Enjoy as such or with mango pickle . Tastes amazing.

- 1-2 tsp Ghee
- 4-4.5 cup Water
- 1 tsp Mustard
- few Red Chillies, broken
- few Curry Leaves
- Salt to taste
