About Vermicelli Upma

Vermicelli Upma – Semiya Upma – Shavige Upittu , is a delicious and popular South Indian dish made using vermicelli . It’s made so frequently at home, yet we all love it.
One can use roasted or un roasted vermicelli.. but Anil roasted vermicelli is my favourite. Always gives a perfect non sticky end result , plus since it’s pre roasted, makes the work so much simpler. Vermicelli Upma can be made with or without vegetables. Addition of veggies makes it more colorful and tasty.
Do try this easy tasty and a quick dish and don’t forget to share your feedback ????

  • Once semiya is cooked, squeeze lime , add chopped coriander leaves and grated coconut ( optional ).Gently fluff the upma and switch off.
  • Immediately after its cooked , it may look little mushy. But after few mins of switching off it will become separated so do not worry.
  • Enjoy hot semiya upma as such or with some coconut chutney on the side .

Points to note

  • To make non sticky fluffy vermicelli upma , roast vermicelli for 2-3 mins in low flame . For 1 cup vermicelli , use 1.5 cup hot water .
  • There are various types of vermicelli like Bambino , Ganesh , 777 , MTR , Anil etc . & I always prefer using Anil brand ( Blue packet ) vermicelli . If this is not available at your place , you can try Bambino brand .
  • You can use choice of veggies like beans , carrot , peas , corn , capsicum etc. Usage of veggies is purely optional .
  • Addition of coconut and cashew is optional.
