Are you wondering what to do with those few slices of leftover old bread lying in the kitchen? Today’s post ” Bread Upma ” is an excellent dish to clear off those left over bread slices . With just a few bread slices and some easily available ingredients from your kitchen pantry, In no time .. an easy tasty and quick dish is ready .
This Upma can be made with or without vegetable as per your choice . Addition of vegetables makes it filling and colorful, you can even pack it for kids lunchbox.
Bread Upma recipe
- Roughly chop bread slices in cubes and keep aside .
- In a pan heat oil . Add Mustard , Urad dal , Channa dal and Peanuts . Splutter . Let ground nuts turn crispy .
- Add few curry leaves , green chillies and finely chopped ginger. Saute for few seconds
- Add chopped onion , saute for 1-2 mins . Let onions are translucent .
- Add tomatoes , tsp salt .Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes . Let the tomatoes turn soft and mushy .
- Once tomatoes are soft ,add capsicum , red chilli powder , haldi , pav bhaji masala , ketchup and butter .Saute 1-2 mins .
- Add 3-4 tbsp water and bring it to a boil . Let the mixture become thick saucy type .
- To the saucy masala , add diced bread slices . Combine gently , let the bread pieces get coated with masala well
- Cover and cook on sim for 3-4 mins . So that bread pieces takes in flavor and also starts becoming little crisp towards edges . Switch off .
- Lastly add coriander leaves and give a mix . You can add lime juice too if you want .
- Enjoy Hot
- If you want you can garnish with fine sev while serving .
Points to Note :
- You can use any bread, wheat bread or sandwich bread … leftover old bread fits perfect as they are not too soft .
- Since i use old dry bread i don’t toast . However if you are using fresh bread , you can toast it a bit to avoid turning mushy .
- No need to remove edges .
- You can make them with or without veggies . Addition of veggies makes it more colorful and tasty .
- Instead of pav bhaji masala , can add rasam powder / chutney powder / garam masala or any masala But I love adding pav bhaji masala
- Instead of peanuts , can add cashew . Peanut / cashew adds some crunch .
- If you feel your upma is too dry , you can sprinkle a dash of water .
Bread Upma
Ingredients
- 6 nos Bread slices
- 1 medium size Onion
- 2 medium size Tomato
Temper
- 3 tsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard
- 1 tsp Urad Dal
- 1 tsp Channa Dal

- 1-2 nos Green Chilli, finely chopped
- 1 tsp Ginger, finely chopped or grated
- 1/2 no capsicum , finely chopped
- 1 tsp Red chilli powder
- 1/2 tsp haldi
- 1 tsp Pav bhaji masala
- 1 tsp Ketchup
- 1 tsp Butter
- coriander leaves, finely chopped
- salt to taste
