Dal is a staple in most of the Indian homes and there are so many recipes for a basic Dal and varies from region to region .
This Dalitoye is one very basic konkani style dal , one of our absolute favorites at home .. really easy to make and tastes so good with rice. The final tadka of Ghee packed with a strong alluring flavor of hing, takes the dish to a completely different level . Trust me and you will wonder how this tadka will make a simple dal taste so different … !!
Serve Dalitoy with hot rice , ghee and with some spicy side dish like Brinjal fry , Aloo fry etc .. yumm .. ghar ka khana cant be better than this !!
Dalitoy Recipe With step by step photos :
- Take a cup of Tuvar dal in a vessel . Rinse well .
- Add 3-4 nos Green Chilli , little salt ,tsp of oil and 2.5 cup of water .
- Pressure cook dal for 3-4 whistles till its cooked soft . Mash it creamy .
- Transferred the cooked dal to a vessel in which you would be making Dalitoye . Add salt and water as required . Adjust to the consistency , you prefer . Personally , I don’t like it too thick or watery like rasam .
- Simmer and boil Dalitoye well . Add curry leaves and chopped coriander leaves .
- When the dalitoye has boiled well , switch off . Add few drops of lime juice . Note that lime juice is optional .
- Lastly , prepare a tempering . Heat Ghee . Splutter Mustard seeds , add 1-2 Red chillies ( broken ) and a big pinch of Hing . Don’t skip hing in any case ,it’s one of hero ingredient of the dish . Pour the tempering over Dalitoye .
- Dalitoye is ready to serve . Enjoy it with some hot rice and ghee drizzled on top .
Points to note while making Dalitoy
- Take care and cook dal really creamy . Under cooked dal for a dalitoy is a let down .
- If you want to do vegan , instead of Ghee , you can use Coconut Oil . Tastes equally good and traditional .
- As a variation , you can add little grated ginger , while boiling dalitoy.
Dalitoy – Dali Tovve
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Tuvar Dal / Split Pigeon Peas
- 3-4 nos Green Chilli
- 1/2 tsp Haldi / Turmeric
- tsp Oil
- Few Curry Leaves
- Few sprigs Coriander leaves
- Salt To taste
- 1/2 Lemon
To temper
- 1-2 tsp Ghee
- 1/2 tsp Mustard
- 1-2 nos Red Chilli, broken
- 1/4 tsp Hing
