Rice , Tuvar Dal and aromatic rasam powder are the hero of this dish and the Ghee tempering added towards the end takes the dish to the next level .
Rasam Rice Recipe with step by step Photos
- Take 1/4 cup of Tuvar Dal , wash well . Soak for 15-20 mins.
- To a mortar pestle add 4-5 flakes Garlic ( optional ) and tsp Pepper . Crush them coarsely .
- To a pressure cooker add 2-3 tsp Oil . Once oil is hot add crushed pepper garlic , few curry leaves and 2-3 nos Green Chilli . Saute for a minute .
- Now add 2-3 chopped tomatoes , salt and saute 1-2 mins.
- Add soaked drained dal . 1 cup washed rice , 1/2 tsp Haldi , 2 tsp Rasam Powder , combine everything.
- Add 4 cup Hot water. Combine everything well .
- Bring to boil .
- Pressure cook in medium flame for 3-4 whistles. Switch off the flame and allow the pressure to cool naturally.
- Once the pressure has released , Open the cooker and when the rasam rice is still hot mash gently . Mashing the rasam rice when its still hot gives a nice creamy mushy texture .
- Next to the mushy rasam rice , add Tamarind pulp , tsp Jaggery and water as required to adjust consistency . Combine everything well . Rasam rice tastes best gooey mushy and little watery .
- Prepare a tempering . Heat ghee . Add a tsp mustard Once it splutters add tsp of jeera and a pinch of hing. Lastly add few curry leaves .
- Pour the tempering over the Rasam Rice . Add chopped Coriander leaves . Combine everything .
- Our One Pot Rasam Rice is ready to serve . Enjoy it hot with some ghee on top , papad on side and some potato fry . A meal can’t get better and tasty than this .. yumm .
Points to Note
- You can use any type of rice like Sona Masoori , steamed rice , Raw Rice , Ponni Rice etc . If you want can skip rice and replace it with Millets , Quinoa, Dalia .
- Soak Dal for sometime for best creamy result .
- Add tamarind pulp only after Dal and rice is pressure cooked . Else , dal wont get cooked properly .
- Addition of pepper and crushed galic makes the rasam rice more flavourful . However , if you dont like garlic , you can skip . But dont skip pepper .
- Consistency of this rasam rice can be varied as per your liking. Tastes best when slightly gooey and watery.
One Pot Rasam Rice
Ingredients
- 1 cup Sona Masoori Rice / Raw Rice
- 1/4 Cup Tuvar Dal / Split Pigeon Peas
- 2-3 nos Tomatoes
- 2 tsp Rasam Powder
- 2-3 nos Green Chilli
- gooseberry size Tamarind, soaked
- 4-5 flakes Garlic, optional
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 2-3 tsp Oil
- 1/2 tsp Haldi / Turmeric powder
- tsp Jaggery
- few sprigs Coriander Leaves
- Salt to taste
To Temper
- 2-3 tsp Ghee
- 1 tsp Mustard
- 1 tsp Jeera / Cumin seeds
- pinch of Hing
- Few Curry leaves
Instructions
- Wash tuvar dal well . Soak for 15-20 mins.
