Easy to make , tasty to taste and super healthy for kids and adults . The steamed nendran bananas are mashed and given to baby’s too .. as they are full of nutrition and easy to digest.
I first tasted this after my marriage , when my mother in law had made . It was so delicious , mouth watering and filling . Since then , it has been a common at my place as my kids too love it.
They are made from a special Kerala type banana called Nendran Banana . This variety of Banana is popular in Coastal Karnataka too as Nendra Bale hannu. They are bigger in size compared to other regular Bananas. The famous yellow colored raw banana chips is made from this variety of banana when they are raw . Upon ripening, their skin gets darker , sweeter ,with a tinge if tangyness .
I have shared earlier nendra banana jamoon , nendra banana halwa that can be made using these bananas .
Steamed Kerala Banana Recipe with step by step photos :
Take Ripe Nendra banana ( Kerala banana) . More the ripe better the result .
- Just cut the banana , into big pieces.
- Next prepare a steamer / pressure cooker . You can use an idli vessel tooalso for steaming. When water starts boiling , place banana pieces in the steamer.
- Steam cook for 10-15 mins. Cooking time depends on how ripe bananas are ( might take few more mins if the bananas are less ripe) . The skin of the banana loosens once they are cooked and bananas would have turned soft. This is the indication that it’s done.
- Take out from steamer. If you want , can serve this plain steamed warm Nendran Banana at this stage itself. Tastes good.
- To make it more tastier… continue with next step .Peel off the bananas skin
- To a pan add few tbsp of jaggery. Quantity of jaggery depends on your preferred sweetness and how sweet bananas are
- Add 1/2 cup water and melt jaggery. We just have to melt jaggery , no need any syrup consistency or anything. This takes 1-2 mins.
- Drop the bananas to jaggery syrup. Mix gently such that banana pieces are well coated with jaggery syrup .
- Simmer and cook for 2-3 mins . Let the banana pieces absorb the jaggery syrup nicely.
- Enjoy warm as such like a snack or can serve it with puttu . Soft , tangy and so delicious .
Points to note while making Kerala style Steamed Nendran Banana :
- Use ripe nendran banana only . The more ripe the banana s the better the outcome . They get cooked really soft and quickly
- Other variety of bananas won’t suit . they get mushier and ooze out juice after steaming .
- Tossing in jaggery after steaming is purely optional . You can serve as such / add a tsp of honey on top , or some jaggery coconut mixture too.
- Can add a pinch of cardamom too for extra taste and flavor.
